It looks like Siggraph 2015 could be remembered as the one where we started to stop caring about which 3D application we use.
Over the past couple of years, Open formats like Alembic, Open SubDiv and EXR have enabled artists to swap assets between apps with little or no hassle. It is great to see this being expaneded further with some new release. First up, Pixar is making it's Universal Scene Description Open Source, The Universal scene looks like Pixar's equivalent to a Scene file, and able to handle a lot of data, if this is adapted by software vendors (The Foundry and Fabric Software are named in the Press release) we have a potential future of one scene file which will work in any DCC app......you know..... heaven!
Speaking of Fabric Engine, you may ask, who? Well Faric engine is launching at Siggraph and it looks like a new way of creating animation, rigging and VFX which can be piped into any 3D app. It has a nodal and script based UI meaning artist or TD can get in there and start to create.
If Fabric takes off, potentially artists will be able to create an rig in Maya using Fabric, which could be opened into MODO, Houdini or C4D with minimum fuss. What are we going to do with all the spare time we will have saved coverting objects people!!!!!
If you see any more 'Open' news from Siggraph let us know, either in the Comments or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
